Undergraduate training
I studied Medicine at the University of Glasgow 1987-1992.
During my time as an undergraduate I won a 3-month scholarship to attend the University of Minneapolis, where I was based in the Respiratory (Pulmonology) and Cardiology departments.
I also won several undergraduate prizes (admittedly in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology!).
Postgraduate training
After a year working in Glasgow, I moved to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where I completed a 2 year “rotation” through various General Medicine specialities.
During this time I passed the MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians) exam on my first attempt.
I thereafter completed 5 years training as a Registrar in Respiratory and General Medicine, taking a break in the middle to obtain my MD thesis, before obtaining my Certificate of Completion of Speciality Training in 2002.
I’ve been a Consultant since 2002.
Teaching & medical education
My day to day clinical practice involves teaching at the bedside and in clinics to a wide range of health care professionals.
I also work for the University of Aberdeen and am a Honorary Senior Lecturer. I lead a team developing online cases for medical students. I also, from June 2022, am ‘lead’ for 5th year (final year) medical students.
In addition to mentoring younger doctors and also physician associates, I also appraise consultant colleagues annually, as required by the General Medical Council.
I have a particular interest in lung diseases which cause scarring in the lungs (known as interstitial lung diseases e.g. lung fibrosis, asbestosis, sarcoidosis).
I am invited to give lectures regularly, to both undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as to those in professions allied to medicine.
I do several invited lectures each year, which is something I enjoy, locally and nationally.
In the last decade I have been an invited lecturer for the British Thoracic Society at their UK Respiratory Trainee “How to pass the Speciality Certificate Exam” training day, most recently in June 2022.
In recent years I have developed a departmental website for my NHS practice www.aberdeenlungs.com
